The Gatuya Coffee Factory is one of two washing stations operated by the New Murarandia Farmers Cooperative Society, which has a total of around 3,500 smallholder producer members. Each farmer owns about 1/5th to 1/3rd of a hectare and delivers coffee in cherry to the factory.
Muranga county is situated on the western slope of the Aberdare Mountains. The soil is rich and red with a climate that is cooler than most of Kenya. There are many valleys and streams throughout the area, where 80% of the population is reliant on agriculture, and most coffee producers operate on less than one hectare of land.
Although this specific lot is not traceable down to a single variety, it represents a blend of Batian, SL28, SL34, and Ruiru 11.
